Check your income limit and if needed request a new tax card
Kela can make adjustments for excess withholding tax only during the year the tax is paid. Check your income limit on the tax card and request a new tax card if necessary.
Kela reminds its customers to check their 2024 income limit and, if necessary, request a new tax card from the Finnish Tax Administration. You need to request a revised tax card for the payment of social security benefits.
If the new tax card applies to future payments, you can ask the Tax Administration to send the new tax card directly to Kela. In that case, you do not need to notify Kela of the new tax card.
If the benefit has already been paid and you want the amount withheld to be corrected afterwards, first request a new tax card. Then notify Kela of the new tax card and ask for a correction of the withheld amount, as Kela does not automatically correct the tax withheld on already paid benefits. The tax card must be valid for social security benefits from the first day of payment of the benefit for which you wish to correct the withholding.
The taxation can be corrected only during the year in which the withholding is paid. If you want the amount withheld in 2024 to be corrected retroactively, your new tax card must reach Kela by mid-December. If you request a revised tax card on 13 December 2024 or later, it may not be possible for Kela to make any adjustments to the withholding tax for 2024.
Tax cards for 2025 will be valid from the beginning of January
Starting in 2025, tax cards will be valid from the beginning of the year. Further, the income limit stated on the tax card is calculated for the full year, that is to say a period of 12 months. In the past, tax cards for the new year were valid from February. Kela gets the tax withholding information for 2025 directly from the Finnish Tax Administration, which means that you do not need to send your new tax card to Kela. See the website of the Finnish Tax Administration for more information on making changes to the tax card for 2025 and the important dates for it.
