How are Kela benefits affected by a birth in the family?
The birth of a child can affect the benefits you get from Kela. Please notify Kela of any changes in your family size and submit a new application or an application for the review of your benefits if necessary.
Family size affects the amount of general housing allowance you can get. If a child is born to your family, apply for a review of your general housing allowance in the OmaKela e-service.
How do I apply for a review of my benefits? (in Finnish)
If you cannot use OmaKela, apply for a review of your housing allowance with the following form: General housing allowance AT 1e (pdf).
Fill out the form and send it together with any supporting documents to us at Kela, PL 10, 00056 KELA.
Use our calculator (in Finnish) to see how much allowance you can get as your family grows.
You can keep receiving your student financial aid while you are being paid pregnancy allowance or parental allowance. The pregnancy allowance and parental allowance will be paid at the minimum rate in such case. Please remember that these daily allowances for parents will count as income when your income is checked for financial aid purposes and that you must make sufficient progress in your studies to avoid having to pay back the financial aid you have received.
If you are the guardian of a child under the age of 18, you can be granted a provider supplement to your study grant. You do not need to apply for the provider supplement separately. We will automatically grant it to you once your guardianship is registered in the population data system.
You cannot get sickness allowance at the same time as pregnancy allowance or parental allowance.
If your sick leave continues after your parental leave has ended, apply for sickness allowance in the OmaKela e-service.
If you cannot use OmaKela, please use the form Sickness allowances SV 8e (pdf) to apply for this benefit. Fill out the form and send it together with any supporting documents to us at Kela, PL 10, 00056 KELA.

No need to apply for a Kela card

Kela gets the necessary information directly from the Population Information System, and the card is ready to be mailed within five days of when the necessary details arrive at Kela.
