Costs for municipal early childhood education and for before- and after-school activities for schoolchildren
Kela can grant basic social assistance towards the cost of municipal child day care services and for before- and after-school activities for 1st and 2nd year students. Basic social assistance may also be granted to older schoolchildren if they have a particular need for assistance. A decision on the child’s particular need for assistance issued by your municipality must be included as a supporting document with your application. Before- and after-school activities must also be provided by the municipality based on the child’s particular need for assistance.
You must first apply to the municipality for an exemption or a reduction of the fee. You can get basic social assistance for up to 2 months towards the fees for early childhood education and before- and after-school activities before qualifying for a reduction or exemption.
Kela can provide basic social assistance towards private fees only in exceptional situations and on very specific grounds. This includes situations where the need for social assistance is estimated to last only a short period of time. Usually you will be directed to apply for a place in municipal early childhood education.
